JOURNAL/nrgr/04.03/01300535-202410000-00028/figure1/v/2024-02-06T055622Z/r/image-tiff Methamphetamine addiction is a brain disorder characterized by persistent drug-seeking behavior, which has been linked with aberrant synaptic plasticity. An increasing body of evidence suggests that aberrant synaptic plasticity is associated with the activation of the NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain containing-3 (NLRP3) inflammasome. 3'-Deoxyadenosin, an active component of the Chinese fungus Cordyceps militaris, has strong anti-inflammatory effects. However, whether 3'-deoxyadenosin attenuates methamphetamine-induced aberrant synaptic plasticity via an NLRP3-mediated inflammatory mechanism remains unclear. We first observed that 3'-deoxyadenosin attenuated conditioned place preference scores in methamphetamine-treated mice and decreased the expression of c-fos in hippocampal neurons. Furthermore, we found that 3'-deoxyadenosin reduced the aberrant potentiation of glutamatergic transmission and restored the methamphetamine-induced impairment of synaptic plasticity. We also found that 3'-deoxyadenosin decreased the expression of NLRP3 and neuronal injury. Importantly, a direct NLRP3 deficiency reduced methamphetamine-induced seeking behavior, attenuated the impaired synaptic plasticity, and prevented neuronal damage. Finally, NLRP3 activation reversed the effect of 3'-deoxyadenosin on behavior and synaptic plasticity, suggesting that the anti-neuroinflammatory mechanism of 3'-deoxyadenosin on aberrant synaptic plasticity reduces methamphetamine-induced seeking behavior. Taken together, 3'-deoxyadenosin alleviates methamphetamine-induced aberrant synaptic plasticity and seeking behavior by inhibiting the NLRP3 inflammasome.

ABSTRACT

As the dominant waste disposal process, incineration is regarded as the main incentive for the "not-in-my-backyard" syndrome, and faces an inescapable pressures of ultra-low emissions (ULE). Establishing precise response relationships between emission factors (EFs) and full-process influencing factors can provide guidance for the synergistic mitigation of flue gas pollutants (FGPs). In this work, the multi-dimensional EFs of FGPs were identified by initially integrating FGPs concentration monitoring data of existing 1,226 processing lines in China, technologies applied and operational experience (OE), local economic and political characteristics. Significant regional imbalance performance was observed, which EFs in the coastal regions were 3.55-92.39 % lower than those of the inland areas. NOx, SO2, HCl were identified as critical components requiring further reduction under the ULE standards, with exceedance rates recorded at 73.07 %, 38.90 %, and 56.69 %, respectively. An indicative value of 20 mg/m3 for PM is recommended for the control of heavy metals of Cd + Tl and Sb + As + Pb + Cr + Co + Cu + Mn + Ni based on the correlation coefficients of r = 0.28 (p < 0.001) and r = 0.20 (p = 0.002), respectively. Waste composition and OE were quantified as the main contributors of EFs' disparities by the tree-branching controlled variable approach established in this study. Predictive models for FGPs control process and corresponding EFs were constructed. EFs of nine FGPs in 2030 would decrease by 0.97-65.42 %, due to more complex purification processes employed to meet ULE's limitations, such as the application of five-stage processes growing from 45.60 % to 58.28 %. While regional imbalance in EFs-SO2 and EFs-HCl were extended with increases from 25.83 % to 33.07 % and 9.91 % to 32.32 %, respectively, due to the consistent disparities of OE and growing heterogeneity of control policies. Enhancing interregional empirical exchanges, reducing the regional market monopolies, and formulating technical guidelines would be beneficial to synergize the reduction of FGPs emissions and alleviate regional imbalance.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Gluteal ptosis results in a severe disturbance of gluteal aesthetics. Currently, satisfactory procedures for improving gluteal ptosis are lacking. OBJECTIVES: To improve gluteal ptosis, the authors propose a novel concept of combined liposuction of the lower gluteal region and fat grafting to the upper gluteal and infragluteal regions, and verify its efficacy and safety. METHODS: Patients who underwent liposuction of the lower gluteal region combined with fat grafting to the upper gluteal and infragluteal regions between January 2020 and July 2023 were retrospectively reviewed. Postoperative changes in the gluteal ptosis grade, complications, and patient satisfaction were evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 28 patients were enrolled in this study; 21 (75.0%) patients had gluteal ptosis grade 4 and 7 (25.0%) patients had gluteal ptosis grade 5. The median fat removal volume was 210 mL, and the median fat graft injected volume was 355 mL in the gluteal region and 180 mL in the infragluteal region. All patients showed improvement in gluteal ptosis; 16 (57.1%) patients improved by 1 grade and 12 (42.9%) patients showed a 2-grade improvement. All patients were satisfied with their posttreatment outcomes. Only 1 patient showed lateral translocation of the fat graft. No other complications were observed. CONCLUSIONS: Liposuction of the lower gluteal region combined with fat grafting to the upper gluteal and infragluteal regions is effective in improving gluteal ptosis, with a low risk of complications and high patient satisfaction.

ABSTRACT

An investigation on the secondary metabolites from a rice culture broth of the endophytic fungus Neurospora terricola HDF-Br-2 derived from the vulnerable conifer Pseudotsuga gaussenii led to the isolation and characterization of 34 structurally diverse polyketides (1-34). Seven of them are previously undescribed, including five unprecedented dihydropyran-containing (terricoxanthones A-E, 1-5, resp.) and one rare tetrahydrofuran-containing (terricoxanthone F, 6) dimeric xanthones. The structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Terricoxanthones each were obtained as a racemic mixture. Their plausible biosynthetic relationships were briefly proposed. Compounds 6, aspergillusone A (8), and alatinone (27) displayed considerable inhibition against Candida albicans with MIC values of 8-16 µg/mL. 4-Hydroxyvertixanthone (12) and 27 exhibited significant inhibitory activities against Staphylococcus aureus, with MIC values of 4-8 µg/mL. Furthermore, compounds 8 and 27 could disrupt biofilm of S. aureus and C. albicans at 128 µg/mL. The findings not only extend the skeletons of xanthone dimers and contribute to the diversity of metabolites of endophytes associated with the endangered Chinese conifer P. gaussenii, but could further reveal the important role of protecting plant species diversity in support of chemical diversity and potential sources of new therapeutics.

ABSTRACT

Afterglow materials with time-dependent color output emerge as huge prospects in advanced optical information encryption but remain a formidable challenge due to the limited exciton transfer from a single emission center. Here, multiple time-dependent afterglow color evolutions are achieved by the strategy of controllable assembly of dual carbon dots (CDs) with an individual afterglow color and decay rate into an RHO zeolite. The strategy possesses high controllability such that B-CDs and G-CDs can be independently generated and in situ embedded into a matrix; in particular, the doped amount of two kinds of CDs can be adjusted conveniently to produce interesting variable afterglow colors. Triggered by different excitations, the prepared B&G-CDs@RHO composites exhibit the conversion of TADF and RTP behaviors, as well as time-dependent afterglow color output from deep-blue to green (365 nm excitation) and static cyan (254 nm excitation). The unique luminescence and excellent stability allow the composite applied in information encryption with high-security levels.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACTNew Delhi metallo-ß-lactamase-1 (NDM-1) has rapidly disseminated worldwide, leading to multidrug resistance and worse clinical prognosis. Designing and developing effective NDM-1 inhibitors is a critical and urgent challenge. In this study, we constructed a library of long-lasting nitroxoline derivatives and identified ASN-1733 as a promising dual-functional antibiotic. ASN-1733 can effectively compete for Ca2+ on the bacterial surface, causing the detachment of lipopolysaccharides (LPS), thereby compromising the outer membrane integrity and permeability and exhibiting broad-spectrum bactericidal activity. Moreover, ASN-1733 demonstrated wider therapeutic applications than nitroxoline in mouse sepsis, thigh and mild abdominal infections. Furthermore, ASN-1733 can effectively inhibit the hydrolytic capability of NDM-1 and exhibits synergistic killing effects in combination with meropenem against NDM-1 positive bacteria. Mechanistic studies using enzymatic experiments and computer simulations revealed that ASN-1733 can bind to key residues on Loop10 of NDM-1, hindering substrate entry into the enzyme's active site and achieving potent inhibitory activity (Ki = 0.22 µM), even in the presence of excessive Zn2+. These findings elucidate the antibacterial mechanism of nitroxoline and its derivatives, expand their potential application in the field of antibacterial agents and provide new insights into the development of novel NDM-1 inhibitors.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Abdominal contouring through liposuction has been practiced for decades. However, few studies have focused on describing the definition and enhancement of the waistline in torso contouring procedures. OBJECTIVES: In the present study, the authors proposed a waistline-based strategy for abdominal liposculpture to achieve a better aesthetic outcome and emphasize high overall patient satisfaction. METHODS: The data of patients who underwent the waistline-based liposculpture procedure from 2020 to 2023 were retrospectively reviewed. Aesthetic improvement of the central trunk contour was evaluated and analyzed by comparing preoperative and postoperative photogrammetric measurements. Satisfaction with the outcome was assessed with a patient satisfaction questionnaire. RESULTS: A total of 70 patients were enrolled in this study. During 6 months of postoperative evaluation, the shape of the central trunk contour improved significantly (both waist concavity and hip convexity increased quantitatively, P < .05), while the position of the waist did not differ significantly postoperatively (P > .05). All patients were satisfied with their postoperative outcomes, including their overall aesthetic appearance, waistline position, and waist-to-hip ratio. There were no intraoperative complications or rare postoperative complications. CONCLUSIONS: Waistline-based liposculpture is a simple and effective procedure to improve the aesthetic outcomes of trunk contouring and has highly satisfactory results after long-term follow-up.

ABSTRACT

Contactless monitoring of heart rate (HR) can improve passive and continuous tracking of cardiovascular activities and overall people's health. Remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) using a camera eliminates the need for a wearable device. rPPG-based HR has shown promising results to be accurate and comparable to conventional methods such as contact PPG. Most experiments use stationary subjects while motion is known to affect the accuracy of remote PPG. In this paper, a novel methodology is introduced to enhance the accuracy and reliability of HR monitoring based on rPPG in the presence of physical activities like Yoga. This method quickly and accurately tracks HR and analyzes head motion to exclude unreliable data within short windows of rPPG signals. The method was tested with smartphone video data collected from 60 subjects when they are doing activities with varying levels of movement. Results show that our method without motion removal improves the accuracy of the HR readings by 0.7 bpm, reaching 3.57 bpm on average for a 30-sec-window. The accuracy is further improved by another 1.3 bpm after removing the motion artifacts, and reaches 2.29 bpm.Clinical relevance- The enhancement of HR readings from shorter rPPG signal with motion tolerance during physical activities can ultimately help with a more reliable HR tracking of people in uncontrolled settings like home which is a critical step towards remote health-care or wellness tracking.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Schizophrenia is a serious mental disease that brings not only serious burdens to patients and their families but also serious challenges to society. More research is needed to find better drugs to treat schizophrenia. This meta-analysis investigated the efficacy and safety of sodium nitroprusside in the treatment of schizophrenia. Methods: Randomized controlled trials comparing the efficacy and safety of sodium nitroprusside in the treatment of schizophrenia were searched via English and Chinese databases. The outcomes, including the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS), were recorded. RevMan 5.3 was used for the meta-analysis. Results: A total of six randomized controlled trials (174 patients) were included. The overall quality of the included studies was good. No statistically significant benefit of sodium nitroprusside over placebo was found when combined PANSS total and BPRS-18 (95% CI: -1.40, 0.02). Except for PANSS positive (95% CI: -1.86, -0.01), there was no significant difference in the scale score after sodium nitroprusside treatment compared with the control group in PANSS total (95% CI: -4.93, 0.23), PANSS general (95% CI: -2.53, 1.33), and PANSS negative (95% CI: -4.44, 0.89). The results of the sensitivity analysis excluding the study with clinical heterogeneity showed that sodium nitroprusside had no statistical benefit for the score of PANSS positive (95% CI: -2.19, 0.46). Moreover, there was also no significant difference in the BPRS-18 (95% CI: -3.23, -0.43). Conclusion: We conservatively believe that sodium nitroprusside does not alleviate the symptoms of schizophrenia compared with placebo. The subjects tolerated sodium nitroprusside well. Our findings provide a new idea for researchers to explore and solve the drug treatment of schizophrenia.

ABSTRACT

Many cathode materials store zinc ions based on the intercalation reaction mechanism in neutral aqueous Zn-ion batteries, and the structural design of the cathodes has been stuck in the curing mode by extending the ion diffusion channel. Here, we first develop halide ions to unlock the electrochemical activity of conversion-type Bi2O3 in aqueous Zn-ion batteries. Notably, the iodide ion shows the best performance compatibility with the Bi2O3 cathode. The electrochemical reaction mechanism studies show that iodide ions can be regarded as a redox medium to reduce the charge-transfer activation energy and motivate the conversion of Bi2O3 from Bi3+ to Bi0 during the cycle. Unsurprising, the discharge-specific capacity can reach 436.8 mAh g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 and achieve a cyclic lifespan of 6000 cycles at a current density of 3 A g-1. The activation of the Bi2O3 conversion reaction by iodide ions is of great significance for broadening the research range of ZIB cathode materials.

ABSTRACT

Nanozyme-mediated strategy for sensing has been widely applied nowadays, in which the construction of a nanozyme cascade platform is an effective and challenging method to simulate the complexity and multifunctionality of natural systems. Herein, a simple and convenient self-cascade sensing platform was developed for the fluorescent detection of cysteine and Hg2+ by a BTC-based MOF through screening the metal sites and crystal sizes. By the introduction of polyvinylpyrrolidone, the as-prepared Cu-BTC possessed a metal center of Cu2+ and smaller size, which exhibited both cysteine oxidase- and peroxidase-like activities. The dual enzymic characters of Cu-BTC made a self-cascade reaction occur during which cysteine was first oxidized to cystine and generated H2O2 in the presence of O2, then H2O2 was decomposed into ·OH, and finally the ·OH triggered the turn-on fluorescence of Cu-BTC. Based on the self-cascade reactions and high affinity of Hg2+ and -SH within cysteine, a fluorescent method was developed to detect cysteine and Hg2+ with a range of 0-160/0-15 µM and a limit of detection of 0.04/0.09 µM, respectively. This work reveals the important role of the Cu2+ center for mimicking cysteine oxidase and gives a feasible strategy for constructing simple self-cascade reactions.

ABSTRACT

The measurement of temperature is indispensable in the fields of life, science, and industry. Fluorescence thermometers are attractive to researchers because of their advantages such as noncontact, high sensitivity, fast response, and excellent anti-interference. Here, a new coordination polymer (HNU-76) was synthesized by assembling Zn2+ with the H3TCA ligand, a fluorescent molecule with an AIE behavior, which can be used as a fluorescence thermometer. At 100-210 K, the fluorescence intensity ratio of HNU-76 versus temperature conforms to an Arrhenius-type decay relationship (R2 = 0.997), which can be the candidate for low-temperature sensing. In order to increase the sensing range, 4-[4-(dimethylamino)styryl] pyndine (DMSP) was successfully embedded on HNU-76, obtaining HNU-76⊃DMSP. The fluorescence intensity of HNU-76⊃DMSP conforms to an Arrhenius-type decay relationship (R2 = 0.997) at 270-360 K versus temperature. HNU-76 can be used for fluorescence detection at low temperatures, due to the DMSP loading, and HNU-76⊃DMSP can serve as the temperature thermometer in a range of temperatures common. Both materials show good cyclability and have the potential to be used in fluorescence thermometers.

ABSTRACT

Ultrasmall CsPbBr3 perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) as promising blue-emitting materials are highly desired for full-color display and lighting applications, but their inferior efficiency and poor ambient stability hinder extensive applications. Herein, a "break-and-repair" strategy has been developed to tightly confine monodispersed ultrasmall CsPbBr3 PQDs in a zeolite. In this strategy, the CsPbBr3 PQDs are introduced into the zeolite via a high temperature evaporation method, wherein the perovskite precursors break the zeolite framework, and amino acids and silane are then used to fix the damaged framework and lock the perovskite QDs within the matrix. By modulating the synthetic conditions to control the growth of CsPbBr3, PQDs with ultrasmall size of 2 nm have been obtained in the zeolite, giving emission centered at 460 nm with a high quantum yield of 76.93%. Strikingly, the PQDs@zeolite composite exhibits water-induced reversible photoluminescence promoted by the coordination between the amino acids and PQDs in a dynamic manner, achieving enhanced water stability (14 days in aqueous solution). This work provides a new perspective for the synthesis of water-stable blue-emitting perovskite composites for potential applications in lighting fields.

ABSTRACT

Background: Lung cancer is a significant health concern in China. There is limited available data of its burden and trends. This study aims to evaluate the trends of lung cancer across different age groups and genders in China and the Group of Twenty (G20) countries, explore the risk factors, and predict the future trends over a 20-year period. Methods: The data were obtained from the GBD study 2019. The number of cases, age standardized rate (ASR), and average annual percentage changes (AAPC) were used to estimate the trend in lung cancer by age, gender, region and risk factor. The trend of lung cancer was predicted by autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model by the "xtarimau" command. The joinpoint regression analysis was conducted to identify periods with the highest changes in incidence and mortality. Additionally, the relationship between AAPCs and socio-demographic index (SDI) was explored. Results: From 1990 to 2019, both the incidence and mortality of lung cancer in China and G20 significantly increased, with China experiencing a higher rate of increase. The years with the highest increase in incidence of lung cancer in China were 1998-2004 and 2007-2010. Among the G20 countries, the AAPC in incidence and mortality of lung cancer in the Republic of Korea was the highest, followed closely by China. Although India exhibited similarities, its AAPC in lung cancer incidence and mortality rates was lower than that of China. The prediction showed that the incidence in China will continue to increase. In terms of risk factors, smoking was the leading attributable cause of mortality in all countries, followed by occupational risk and ambient particulate matter pollution. Notably, smoking in China exhibited the largest increase among the G20 countries, with ambient particulate matter pollution ranking second. Conclusion: Lung cancer is a serious public health concern in China, with smoking and environmental particulate pollution identified as the most important risk factors. The incidence and mortality rates are expected to continue to increase, which places higher demands on China's lung cancer prevention and control strategies. It is urgent to tailor intervention measures targeting smoking and environmental pollution to contain the burden of lung cancer.

ABSTRACT

Fungichromin is a polyene macrolide antibiotic with potent killing activity against a broad range of agricultural pathogens and filamentous fungi and a wide range of potential applications. The production of fungichromin is still hampered by poor fermentation yield and high cost. In this study, the whole genome sequencing of fungichromin-producing Streptomyces sp. WP-1 was conducted, and the fungichromin biosynthetic gene cluster was identified. Comparative analysis revealed that the fungichromin biosynthetic gene cluster contains two regulatory genes, ptnF, and ptnR. The roles of ptnF and ptnR were determined through knockout and complementation. The yield of fungichromin was increased by overexpressing these two regulatory genes, as well as the crotonyl CoA reductase/carboxylase gene ptnB in Streptomyces sp. WP-1. The yield of fungichromin was increased to 8.5 g/L using a combination of genetic engineering and a medium optimization strategy, which is the highest fermentation titer recorded. KEY POINTS: • Confirmation of the positive regulation of ptnF and ptnR on fungichromin. • Improvement of fungichromin production by the construction of ptnF, ptnR, and ptnB overexpression strains. • Improvement of fungichromin production by the addition of soybean oil and copper ions at optimal concentration.

ABSTRACT

Metal-halide perovskites possess great potential for electrochemical water splitting that has not been realized due to their intolerance to water. Here, methylammonium lead halide perovskites (MAPbX3 ) are used to electrocatalyze water oxidation in aqueous electrolytes by creating MAPbX3 @AlPO-5 host-guest composites. Due to the protective feature of the zeolite matrix, halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) confined in aluminophosphate AlPO-5 zeolites achieve an excellent stability in water. The resultant electrocatalyst undergoes dynamic surface restructuring during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with the formation of an edge-sharing α-PbO2 active layer. The existence of charge-transfer interactions at the MAPbX3 /α-PbO2 interface significantly modulates the surface electron density of the α-PbO2 and optimizes the adsorption free energy of oxygen-containing intermediate species. Furthermore, the soft-lattice nature of halide perovskites enables more facile triggering of lattice-oxygen oxidation of nanostructured α-PbO2 , exhibiting pH-dependent OER activity and non-concerted proton-electron transfer for MAPbX3 @AlPO-5 composite. As a result, the developed MAPbBr3 @AlPO-5 composite manifests an ultralow overpotential of 233 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in 1 m KOH. These findings offer facile access to halide perovskite applied to water electrolysis with enhanced intrinsic activity, providing a new paradigm for designing high-efficiency OER electrocatalysts.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Adjuvant chemotherapy is controversial in rectal cancer, especially after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (NCRT). This retrospective study aims at evaluating adjuvant chemotherapy's long-term survival benefits in stage II and stage III rectal adenocarcinoma (RC). METHODS: This study obtained data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database registered between 2010 and 2015. The survival analyses used the Kaplan-Meier method and were compared by log-rank test. The factors that affect survival outcomes were analyzed by univariate and multivariate Cox regression. The propensity score matching (1:4) was used to ensure the balance of variables between different groups. RESULTS: The median follow-up time for overall patients was 64 months. The 5-year overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) rates were 51.3% and 67.4% in the adjuvant chemotherapy (-) group and 73.9% and 79.6% in the adjuvant chemotherapy ( +) group (p < 0.001, p = 0.002). However, subgroup analysis showed adjuvant chemotherapy after NCRT improved the 5-year OS but not CSS rates in stage II and stage III RC (p = 0.003, p = 0.004; p = 0.29, p = 0.3). Univariate and multivariate analyses found adjuvant chemotherapy after NCRT was an independent prognosis factor of OS but not CSS (HR 0.8, 95%CI 0.7-0.92, p < 0.001; p = 0.276). CONCLUSION: The survival benefits from adjuvant chemotherapy were associated with the status of NCRT for pathological stage II and III RC. For patients who did not receive NCRT, adjuvant chemotherapy is needed to significantly improve long-term survival rates. However, adjuvant chemotherapy after NCRT did not significantly improve long-term CSS.

ABSTRACT

Four undescribed palmarumycin-type spirodioxynaphthalenes (phyligustricins A-D) and a known biogenetic precursor (palmarumycin BG1) were isolated from a solid fermentation of Phyllosticta ligustricola HDF-L-2, an endophyte associated with the endangered Chinese conifer Pseudotsuga gaussenii. The structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods, single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, and electronic circular dichroism calculations. Both phyligustricins A and B have an unprecedented spirodioxynaphthalene-derived skeleton containing an extra 4H-furo [3,2-c]pyran-4-one moiety, while phyligustricins C and D are p-hydroxy-phenethyl substituted spirodioxynaphthalenes. The plausible biosynthetic relationships of the isolates were briefly proposed. Phyligustricins C and D and palmarumycin BG1 showed considerable antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, each with an MIC value of 16 µg/mL. Palmarumycin BG1 displayed significant inhibitory effects against ACL and ACC1, with IC50 values of 1.60 and 8.00 µM, respectively.
